Matthew graduated from Florida Tech in the fall of 2010, earning his degree in physics. Prior to Florida Tech, he attended high school at the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, where he earned four varsity baseball letters and was named to the All-City team in his junior year. Matthew is an original team member and at the time of his graduation held the team records for batting average for a single season (.429) and career (.373), career on-base percentage (.500), and several other offensive categories. Matthew returned to the team as Head Coach starting with the Fall 2011 season. In addition to earning some ejections through the years (typically for daring to know the rulebook), Matthew once got so lippy that he called an umpire a comedian and was pre-warned for the indiscretion.
